Mark Wehry, a patient of Dr. R. Michael Greiwe, has completed all of the Flying Pig marathons to date since the Inaugural Flying Pig many years ago. He is one of only 94 people to have completed them all.
“This year, Mark had a major set-back, a torn meniscus in his knee. I was skeptical, but you can’t keep Mark down. He had surgery about two months before the 2017 Flying Pig and was able to complete his marathon. I am very proud of Mark,” said Dr. Greiwe.
Mark injured his knee on January 14th and continued to run 12 miles on January 16th when he noticed his meniscus was having issues. He tried treating it with steroid shots for about a month, which lead him to have an MRI that revealed the tear. Mark said, “I had the meniscectomy on March 3rd. I waited two weeks and ran a mile on a treadmill.” He continued to add more miles onto his runs each week until experiencing some bursitis, which lead him to shut down running until The Pig.
“I completed The Pig in 5:04 with no knee pain at all and none since. It was not my worst time in my 22 marathons, as that time was 5:15 and it was my goal to beat that time,” Mark said.
