Joshua M. Murphy, M.D., a Board-certified orthopaedic surgeon specializing in minimally-invasive knee and hip replacement, is now offering stem cell injections as an alternate treatment for knee and hip osteoarthritis. While these injections are not expected to cure osteoarthritis, they may delay the need for a total knee or hip replacement.
Using a patient's own tissue, fat is extracted from the patient's own midsection and then, while the patient waits just a few minutes, the fat is processed to provide adipose-derived stem cells (cells that come from adipose tissue, which is tissue that stores fat) which are then injected into the patient's area of concern. The entire procedure can be performed in the doctor's office in less than an hour.
Not all patients are good candidates for this procedure. In addition, while the procedure is FDA-approved, insurances do not currently cover it.
