A simple misstep or faulty landing can cause your ankle to roll - and the next thing you know, your ankle looks like a balloon and is painful. Our friends and coaches tell us to just "walk it off."
It is estimated that within 1.5 years of the initial ankle sprain, at least half of those people will have a second ankle sprain. Without proper rehabilitation, we can experience persistent impairments in balance, range of motion and strength, sometimes leading to injuries in other parts of the body. In the most persistent cases, these ankle sprains can develop into chronic ankle instability. This instability can cause people to engage in less activity and lead to a reduced level of function in their lives.
That's quite a long term effect for such a "simple" injury, wouldn't you say?
