It is important to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle throughout all decades of life. Many people choose a variety of activities to maintain that activity level. However, as we age, our knees can become less resilient to heavy stressors.
Choose activities that offer less stress on the knees, such as:
- Aquatic exercises/swimming - Offers a good workout while limiting weght-related stress on the knees
- Low-impact activities such as walking, elliptical exercise, cycling or using a recumbent bicycle - Avoid high-impact activities on the knee like running and jumping
- Yoga/Pilates - However, avoid repetitive squatting or kneeling activities that may bother the knee.
Also, avoid repetitive exercises that involve going up or down on steps.
